People often search for the "Aadhaar photo size" expecting a pixel and KB limit like an exam form. There isn't one, because UIDAI does not take an uploaded photo for Aadhaar at all. The photo on your Aadhaar is captured by the operator's camera at an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre, together with your fingerprints and iris scan. This short guide explains what that means, so you don't waste time resizing a photo you can't use.
Why there is no upload
Your Aadhaar photo is part of your biometric record, like your fingerprints. It is taken under the same supervised conditions as the other biometrics, so it can be relied on for identification. A photo you upload from home can't be verified in the same way, so the online self-service portal doesn't offer a photo upload.
How to update the photo
- Find an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre. UIDAI's website (uidai.gov.in) lists centres and lets you book an appointment at some of them.
- Go in person with your Aadhaar number. A photo update is a biometric update, so it can't be done by anyone else on your behalf.
- The operator captures a new photo, and you pay the update fee UIDAI sets. Check the current fee on uidai.gov.in before you go.
- Keep the acknowledgement slip. It has an update request number you can use to track the status online.
Follow UIDAI's current instructions on uidai.gov.in; procedures and fees are set by UIDAI and can change.
What you can do online
Once the update is processed, you can download the e-Aadhaar from UIDAI's portal and it will show the new photo. An e-Aadhaar or the PVC card always uses the photo in your biometric record, so editing the photo on a downloaded copy is not a valid update.
If an exam form asks for Aadhaar
Exam forms may ask for your Aadhaar number, or use it to verify your identity (SSC's notice, for example, refers to Aadhaar-based authentication). They don't change your Aadhaar photo. For the photo the exam form itself asks for, use your exam's page and the editor.
