"White background" is the default assumption for exam photos, and it is right most of the time. But not always: one state commission asks for a coloured background, and the OCI card asks for a light background that is specifically not white. Before you replace the background, check what your exam actually says. If you need to do it, our white background guide explains how.
Background rules from the official notices
| Exam or document | Background |
|---|---|
| UPSC, Passport Seva | Plain white |
| JEE Main, NEET UG, CUET UG, UGC NET, GATE, CAT | White |
| NEET PG (NBEMS) | White, for both the live and the uploaded photo, with no objects behind you |
| Banks: IBPS, SBI, RBI, LIC | Light, preferably white |
| MHT CET | Plain light colour or white, no shadows |
| CTET, Kerala PSC | White or light |
| MPSC | Solid colour, preferably blue, green or red |
| OCI card | Plain light colour, not white, no border |
| US visa | White or off-white |
| UK passport | Plain, light-coloured |
| Canada visa | Plain white or light |
What "light" means
"Light" covers white, off-white, cream and pale grey or pale blue. It does not cover a patterned curtain, a bookshelf or a doorway, even if they are pale. The point is a plain backdrop that doesn't distract from your face and doesn't merge with your hair.
When white is wrong
For the OCI card, a pure white background breaks the rule, so a light grey or off-white wall is the safest choice. For MPSC, a white wall does not match the instruction. In both cases replacing the background with white would make things worse. The editor's background tool lets you pick any plain colour, not only white.
Reshoot or replace?
If you can, reshoot: stand about half a metre in front of a plain, light wall, facing a window. A real wall gives natural edges around your hair and no cut-out look. Replace the background on your device when you can't reshoot, or when the only photo you have is in a busy room. The background changer does it in your browser without uploading the photo. Check the edges around your hair and ears before you use it.
A plain background is also smaller
A plain background compresses better. In our benchmark, swapping a busy background for white made the same 350 × 450 px photo a median 16.6% smaller at JPEG quality 80. Photos that already had a plain wall, or so little background that it hardly mattered, barely changed. That leaves more of a tight KB limit for your face.
